Knowledge Domains

The knowledge FM draws on

Eight clusters and the disciplines within them: what each field studies, why FM needs it, and where the boundary runs between borrowed and native knowledge.

Control framework, not navigation structure

IFMA's eleven core competencies, set out in the Global Job Task Analysis (2017), are used here as a completeness check: every competency area must appear in at least one knowledge domain. They are deliberately not used as the structure of this section. A competency framework describes what an FM professional must be able to do; a knowledge taxonomy describes which disciplines produce the knowledge. The two do not coincide, and that difference is kept visible on purpose.

The link to the sibling platform

Alongside this Atlas, Workplaced maintains the Workplace Strategy Method, a platform of 41 Evidence Domains. One of them is Facilities Management, described there as the operation of buildings and workplace services in use, with IFMA, EuroFM and the ISO 41000 series as its research base. That domain warns of the handover cliff: FM inherits a workplace concept it was not allowed to shape. In the other direction, Workplace Strategy, Corporate Real Estate Management and Organisational Design appear here as knowledge domains FM depends on. The link is therefore structural and citable both ways — one discipline described twice from outside — not a presentational device.
