Service Management
Governing service delivery as a repeatable process.
What it studies
Service management studies the design, delivery and improvement of services in general: service blueprinting, service levels, demand and capacity planning, and the generic principles of repeatable service delivery. The field predates facility management as a discipline and supplies most of the vocabulary FM uses to describe services.
Why Facility Management needs it
Almost every instrument FM uses to steer service delivery — service levels, escalation matrices, capacity planning — originates in service management, not in an FM-specific evidence base. Knowledge of the broader discipline stops FM from misapplying a generic instrument as if it were invented for the facilities context, and helps identify better-fitting variants from other sectors.

- Is this service instrument generic or specifically developed for facilities delivery, and does that distinction matter here?
- Where in the service chain (blueprint) does the actual value loss arise that explains the complaint?
