About this platform
The Facility Management Atlas is a reference platform on Facility Management as an integrated professional discipline: the domain, the services, the organisational forms, the management system, the knowledge base, the standards, the history and the research. No consulting, no sales, no service offering — only an ordered description of a discipline.
Sibling platform to the Workplace Strategy Method
The Workplace Strategy Method describes how organisations arrive at reasoned workplace decisions: a disciplined sequence of demand, evidence, design, decision and recalibration. This Atlas describes the discipline that must then deliver, sustain and account for those decisions.
The two platforms are deliberately built as siblings. They share their editorial line, their structural principles and their refusal to let vendor claims pass for knowledge. They differ in subject: the Method is about decision-making before the intervention, the Atlas about the discipline that takes over afterwards. Where a subject touches both — workplace strategy, demand management, user experience — we cross-reference rather than duplicate the argument.
Both platforms are maintained by Workplaced. Maintenance here means: content is revised when standards change, when new research appears, or when a formulation turns out to mislead in practice. Every page carries a review date, so the age of a statement is visible.
Nine editorial rules
These rules decide what may appear on this platform and how it is phrased. They apply to every page, including where they make the text less saleable.
Evidence over convention
That a practice is common does not make it correct. Where research or normative ground exists, it takes precedence over what the market simply became used to doing.
No vendor language
No product names posing as professional concepts, no ideas that exist only to sell something. Where a term comes from the market rather than from a standard, we say so.
Uncertainty is named
Where evidence is thin, dated or contradictory, we say it. An open question is more useful than a confident answer that will not hold.
Distinctions are held
Operating model, sourcing model and contract model are not synonyms; client and user are not either. Conflating concepts is not a matter of style here but an error.
No maturity ladders
Models are described as a continuum, not as a staircase to an end state. Which model fits depends on demand, risk and capacity — not on maturity.
Standards are paraphrased, never reproduced
Standards are copyright protected. We describe purpose, scope and thrust in our own words and point to the official source for the text itself.
Bilingual without loss
Everything exists in Dutch and English. Dutch professional terms without a natural English equivalent — regieorganisatie, demandorganisatie — stay canonically Dutch, with an English gloss in the body text.
Restrained tone
No superlatives, no exclamation marks, no promises. The writing is editorial: one thought per paragraph, argument over enthusiasm.
Provenance and review visible
Every substantive page states what it rests on and when it was reviewed. Where content is not yet written, it says so rather than appearing as provisional text.
A discipline does not mature by offering more services, but by better accounting for why it offers them.
Sourcing and method
The concepts on this platform rest where possible on the ISO 41000 family — ISO 41011:2024 for terminology, ISO 41001 for the management system and ISO 41002:2026 for its application — and on the European line as consolidated in EN 15221-8:2025. Market frameworks such as the IFMA competency models are used and labelled as such: useful, widely held, but not normative.
Empirical claims are tested against peer-reviewed research and institutional sources; the Research Library states how strong the evidence is per theme. Historical passages separate established facts from received stories. Where practice and literature diverge, both are shown rather than one omitted.
This platform is editorial, not commercial. Nothing is sold, no provider pays for inclusion, and corrections are welcome via Workplaced.
