Standards and frameworks
The formal normative base of Facility Management: the ISO 41000 family, the European EN 15221 line with its 2025 consolidation, and — kept separate — the frameworks from the market.

Standardisation over time
Two tracks converging: the European EN 15221 line from 2006 and the international ISO 41000 family from 2017, with the 2025 European consolidation as the alignment moment.
2006
EN 15221-1 and -2: first pan-European definition and agreement guidance, after a process involving 29 countries.
2011–2012
EN 15221-4 to -7: taxonomy, processes, space measurement and benchmarking.
2017
ISO 41011 and 41012 appear; the international track takes over terminology and sourcing.
2018
ISO 41001: the first certifiable FM management system.
2020–2024
Strategy, policy, behaviour, technology and sustainability are elaborated separately; ISO 41011 gets a second edition in 2024.
2025
EN 15221-8 consolidates parts 3, 4, 5 and 7 and explicitly aligns the European track with ISO 41000.
2026
ISO 41002 addresses the FM organisation itself; national adoption of EN 15221-8 runs to May.
