What it studies
Fire safety studies risk, prevention, detection and suppression of fire: the fire behaviour of materials, compartmentation, escape route design, detection and suppression systems, and the organisational measures around them. The field combines engineering with behavioural science on evacuation under stress.
Why Facility Management needs it
Fire safety systems (detection, compartmentation, evacuation) sit under statutory compliance with very low tolerance for deferral. FM operates these systems daily but rarely designs them; understanding the underlying fire-safety logic is needed to recognise when a change in use (a different layout, more occupants) undermines the fire safety concept without any alarm reporting it.

- Does the fire safety concept still hold after this change in layout or use?
- Are compartmentation and escape routes physically intact, or are they broken in practice (doors propped open, storage in escape routes)?
- What is the consequence of deferring an identified defect, expressed in risk, not merely in violation?

Current research frontier
The rise of battery storage and electric charging infrastructure in and around buildings introduces fire risks that existing compartmentation and suppression concepts were not designed for, and for which regulation is still catching up.
