What it studies

Biodiversity studies the site around a building as a living ecosystem: species richness, green and blue infrastructure, and the effects of paving, lighting and maintenance on plant and animal life. It is ecological science applied to the immediate surroundings of the built environment.

Why Facility Management needs it

FM manages the site maintenance that directly affects biodiversity — mowing regime, lighting, paving — and in many jurisdictions encounters permit requirements around protected species during renovation or demolition. Site management is also increasingly included as an indicator in sustainability reporting.

Questions it answers

  • Has an ecological quick scan been carried out before renovation or demolition affects the site?
  • Does the current mowing regime unnecessarily reduce biodiversity relative to what is expected aesthetically?

Evidence sources

  • National nature-protection legislation (jurisdiction-dependent, e.g. the Habitats Directive at EU level).

Operating and management implications

  • Permit obligations around protected species can delay a renovation by months if the ecological check is carried out too late.

Common misuse

  • Green roof planting presented as a biodiversity measure without species selection that actually supports local fauna.

Current research frontier

The relationship between small-scale site measures and measurable biodiversity gain at building level is methodologically weakly substantiated; most claims rest on the presence of measures, not on measured effect.
