Energy Management
Governing energy use, not merely reporting it.
What it studies
Energy management studies how energy use in building and service is governed: measuring, monitoring, target-setting and steering on consumption and cost across the organisation. The field supplies the management system — often an energy management plan or ISO 50001 system — within which technical interventions are prioritised.
Why Facility Management needs it
FM is the party that actually consumes and measures energy, and energy management gives FM the governance framework to steer that consumption rather than merely record it. Without that framework, energy becomes a bill that is paid, not a variable that is controlled.
Questions it answers
- Is there an energy baseline correctly normalised for production or occupancy fluctuations, or is raw data being compared?
- Who is responsible for corrective action when consumption deviates from target, and within what timeframe?

- An energy management system without a mandate to act is a dashboard, not a management system.

Common misuse
- Confused with Energy Engineering (in the Built Environment & Engineering cluster): energy engineering designs and sizes installations and flows; energy management governs ongoing consumption through a management system. A technically well-designed installation can still be poorly governed, and vice versa. Both are needed and refer to one another, not to the same thing.
- An energy saving presented without normalisation for a milder winter or lower occupancy.
Current research frontier
Real-time energy control based on dynamic electricity pricing requires control logic that most existing building management systems do not yet support; the interface between energy management and BMS control is technically and organisationally still immature.
