What it studies

Waste studies the separation, reduction, processing and accounting of material flows leaving a building or service. It works with the waste hierarchy (prevention above processing), flow analysis and the statutory recording duty attached to certain waste categories.

Why Facility Management needs it

FM organises physical collection and the contract with the processor, and is therefore responsible for the quality of on-site separation — the step that most determines what is actually reused versus incinerated.

Questions it answers

  • Is on-site separation genuinely observed, or is separated waste later recombined at the processor?
  • Which waste stream is subject to a statutory recording duty, and is that recording in order?

Evidence sources

  • EU Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC and successors); national waste regulation.

Operating and management implications

  • A high on-site separation rate says nothing if the processor recombines the streams anyway; the chain must be verified as a whole.

Common misuse

  • Labelled collection bins presented as evidence of circular performance, without processor data.

Current research frontier

Traceability of waste streams through to final processing remains weak, especially for complex streams such as mixed construction and demolition waste; blockchain-based tracking is being explored but is not yet common practice.
