What it studies
Smart buildings studies the integration of BMS, IoT and data analysis into connected technology that responds to actual use, rather than a fixed schedule. The field concerns the system architecture that brings sensor data, control logic and user interaction together into one functioning whole.
Why Facility Management needs it
The term 'smart building' is often used commercially for isolated technology installations without genuine integration; FM needs this knowledge domain to judge whether a claim holds at system level, rather than at component level.
Questions it answers
- Do the individual systems (BMS, access, IoT) actually communicate with each other, or do they merely share a building?
- What happens to the building's 'intelligence' when the vendor of one subsystem stops supporting it?
