Distinctions
BMS and IWMS
Controlling the building, or managing information about it?
Controls physical building systems in real time: HVAC, lighting, access.
Manages information and workflow: space records, work orders, leases.
The difference in one sentence
A BMS runs the building; an IWMS runs the information about the building.
Why they get conflated
The two systems increasingly integrate, letting the difference in function fall out of view.
Why it matters
A BMS fault is a control problem; an IWMS fault is an information problem — the escalation route differs.
How to tell them apart
Ask whether the system physically acts on the building, or only records data about it.
